MBS item numbers for Other Medical Practitioners (OMPs) and Prescribed Medical Practitioners — what you can bill, what's restricted, and how it differs from VR GP billing.

⚠️ PMP items (179/181 series) are only available in Modified Monash 2–7 areas. In MM1 (metropolitan), PMPs use the same items as MPs (52–65 series). RACF items for PMPs: 90183, 90188, 90202, 90212, 90215.
The same time-bracket consult attracts a different schedule fee depending on your provider category. Non-VR practitioners are subsidised at a lower percentage of the notional fee for the equivalent service. PMPs (in eligible rural areas) receive higher rebates than OMPs. Fees below from the MBS Book (March 2026) — verify current values against MBS Online before billing.

PMPs consistently receive around 78% of the equivalent VR GP fee. OMPs (in metropolitan / MM1 areas) receive around 44–48% for standard consults. Same MyMedicare and usual medical practitioner requirements apply to 392/393 as to 965/967. Cannot co-claim with consultation items on the same day. Non-VR CDM fees are approximately 80% of the VR equivalent ($128.55 vs $160.60 for the plan; and vs $160.60 for the review).
Non-VR practitioners cannot bill the standard GP MHTP items (2715, 2717). They use a separate item set — subdivided by whether the practitioner has completed the mental health skills training, and by the time bracket. GP-registered PMPs (those on Register B of the GP Register) receive lower fees than PMPs with mental-health-skills-training who are not GP-registered.

Compared to VR GP MHTP items 2715 ($108.95, 20–40 min) and 2717 ($160.50, 40+ min). MHTP review items are billed under the standard non-VR consult items — there's no dedicated non-VR MHTP review item.
PMPs use items 224–227 as the equivalent of the VR GP 701–707 series. Time brackets and eligibility criteria are the same. There is no PMP equivalent of the ATSI health assessment (item 715) — this remains VR GP only. OMPs (Register A / non-PMP) do not have access to health assessment items at all.

PMP health assessment fees are approximately 80% of the equivalent VR GP fee. Fees indexed to 1 July 2026 from MBS Book. ATSI health assessment (VR item 715, $254.10) has no non-VR equivalent.
