📌 Key billing rules

All rules from MBS Book July 2026 explanatory notes. MBS Book July 2026

⛔ Consult + CDM = NO AN.0.47
Items 965, 967, 392, 393 cannot be claimed on the same day as a general attendance item (3/23/36/44 or telehealth equivalents). The CDM item includes the attendance component.
✅ Consult + MHTP = possible AN.0.56
A MHTP (2715/2717) and a standard attendance CAN be co-claimed — but both must be clinically relevant, distinct services, and procedure time must not overlap consultation time.
⏱ Time must not overlap AN.0.7
When two services are billed on the same day, the time for the second service must NOT be included in the consultation time.
🔁 Two consults same day = possible but strict AN.0.7
You can bill two attendances on the same day if genuinely separate, with a reasonable lapse of time. Record the time of each.
🩹 Aftercare — you can’t bill your own AN.0.71
You cannot claim a general attendance item for aftercare if you performed the procedure.
💰 Multiple operations rule MBS Book
Highest-fee procedure pays 100%, subsequent procedures are reduced. Diagnostic items (ECG, spirometry) are NOT subject to this rule.
