CPD Homes in Australia — a plain comparison

Sources

Since 2023, every registered doctor must belong to an AMC-accredited CPD home and complete 50 hours of CPD each calendar year (unless exempt). Here's who needs one, what counts, and how the homes open to GPs, registrars and IMGs compare.

In one line: pick one accredited CPD home that suits your scope of practice — a college (RACGP / ACRRM) or a non-college home (Osler, AMA CPD Home, CPD Australia) — do 50 hours a year, and your home tracks and reports your compliance to the Medical Board. Need somewhere to earn those hours? See CPD education providers.

🧮 The 50 hours, split up

The Medical Board sets the minimum mix. You decide the activities within it, guided by your home:

12.5hEducational activities
reading, lectures, conferences, online modules
25hReviewing performance + measuring outcomes
minimum 5h of each — audit, peer review, outcome data
12.5hYour free choice
across any of the categories above

A written Personal Development Plan and an end-of-year reflection are also required. Specialists must include their college's specialty high-level requirements whichever home they pick.

That's 7 of the 21. There are 21 AMC-accredited CPD homes in total — all the specialist medical colleges plus five non-college homes. The cards above are the ones most relevant to GPs, registrars and IMGs. A few specialist colleges also accept doctors with an interest in their field (for example dermatology, sport & exercise medicine, or women's health), so a GP with a special interest isn't limited to the homes above. For the full list across every specialty, see the AMC accredited CPD homes register.

🎓 Registrars & IMGs — the short version

On an accredited training program? Your training program (AGPT / RACGP / ACRRM) is your CPD pathway. You meet the requirement by participating in it — you don't separately nominate and pay for a home while training.
Specialist IMG on the specialist pathway, under assessment? Your CPD home is the college assessing you — for the GP pathway, that's RACGP or ACRRM. IMGs with general registration working in general practice can choose any home open to all doctors.
Intern or PGY2? Doctors in an accredited intern or PGY2 program (or supervised hospital/GP practice positions) don't need to join a home yet. Exemptions for parental/carer leave or serious illness are granted by your CPD home, not the Board.
