Non-VR doctors who would previously have applied to PEP Standard now apply to the Fellowship Support Program (FSP). FSP 2027.1 intake has a new structure, education model, and eligibility — different from FSP 2026.2. Older blog posts and forums often still describe the closed program. What an IMG also needs to know
Beyond the program itself, these are the documents and assessments most IMGs encounter on their RACGP journey.
A structured interview administered by an approved provider (RACGP, ACRRM, or IME — Australasian Medical Council assessment service). Most IMGs need a successful PESCI for general registration in general practice, particularly under Specialist Pathway or for limited registration. The PESCI verifies the doctor's clinical decision-making for the proposed scope. See the RACGP PESCI page.
Letters of Status
RACGP-issued letters confirming the IMG's status in the College's training/recognition processes — used for immigration, employment, and AHPRA registration purposes. Request via the RACGP Letters of Status page.
National Entry Assessment (NEA)
Required for FSP applicants. A structured assessment used by the RACGP at program entry. Details on the FSP applicant handbook.
Section 19AB & Distribution Priority Areas (DPA)
Most IMGs are subject to section 19AB of the Health Insurance Act 1973 — the 10-year moratorium during which Medicare benefits attach only where a section 19AB exemption is held. Most exemptions require the doctor to work in a Distribution Priority Area (DPA). Check current designations on the Health Workforce Locator. Modified Monash Model (MMM) — what the numbers mean
The MMM categorises locations 1–7: MMM1 = major city, MMM2 = regional centre, MMM3 = large rural town, MMM4 = medium rural, MMM5 = small rural, MMM6 = remote, MMM7 = very remote. FSP placements are generally in MMM2–7; RVTS focuses on MMM3–7. Check classifications on the Health Workforce Locator (select MMM 2019 + DPA layer).
The exams — AKT, KFP, CCE
The RACGP fellowship exams are the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT), Key Feature Problem (KFP), and Clinical Competency Exam (CCE). The CCE replaced the older OSCE-style clinical exam. See the RACGP AKT & KFP page and CCE page.
