Did you know? — Quick facts for Australian registrars and IMGs

Operational facts you'll wish someone had told you in week one. Every snippet sourced. Information only — none of this is clinical or prescribing advice.

Verified June 2026. Rules change — each snippet links to the source for cross-check. Some items vary by state.
💊 Prescribing & PBS

Did you know — standard PBS scripts are valid 12 months, but Schedule 8 and Schedule 4 Appendix D scripts only last 6 months?

Validity runs from the date the script was written, not the date it was filled. Unused repeats expire with the script — they don't roll over. Some states have additional monitoring rules layered on top, so check your state's poisons regulation for S8.

Did you know — PBS Authority Required (non-streamlined) items can be requested via HPOS Form Upload, not just the phone line?

HPOS Form Upload is often faster than calling 1800 888 333, especially outside business hours. The approval comes back via HPOS message. Streamlined Authority items don't need any prior approval at all — the 4-digit code on the script is enough.

Did you know — RPBS Authority for veteran patients goes through VAPAC, not the general PBS line?

VAPAC (Veterans' Affairs Pharmaceutical Advisory Centre) is on 1800 552 580 — 24/7 — for RPBS Authority prescriptions for DVA card holders. The general PBS Authority line is for non-veteran patients. Mixing them up wastes time on the call.

🏥 Medicare & MBS

Did you know — there are two Medicare phone lines and they're for different people?

132 011 is the patient line — for Medicare cards, claims, eligibility queries. 132 150 is the provider line — for billing, provider numbers, claiming queries. Calling the wrong one means a long wait followed by being told to call the other. Save both in your phone now.

Did you know — your provider number is tied to a clinic location, not to you?

When you change clinics, you need a new provider number for the new site before you can bill from there. The application is via HPOS or the PRODA online services. Not having the right provider number for the right location is a common cause of rejected claims.

📜 AHPRA & CPD

Did you know — medical registration renews by 30 September each year, and the CPD year runs 1 October to 30 September?

All medical practitioners renew their registration by 30 September. You declare you've completed your CPD for the year ending that day. Late renewal has a fast-track window of 1–30 November with a late fee. After that you can't practise until a fresh application is approved.

Did you know — even general registrants (not on a training program) need a CPD home and 50 CPD hours per year?

Since 1 January 2023, all medical practitioners must have an accredited CPD home, develop an annual plan, and complete 50 hours of CPD relevant to their scope across the three required activity categories. Audit can ask for evidence — keep records for 3 years.

🎓 Training & contracts

Did you know — the NTCER is the standard registrar employment contract, and it's the floor, not the ceiling?

The National Terms and Conditions for the Employment of Registrars (NTCER) is negotiated between GPRA and GPSA. It sets the minimum pay, super, leave, study leave, and on-call entitlements for AGPT registrars. Your practice can offer better — but not less. Worth reading before you sign.

Did you know — there are four current GP fellowship pathways, not just AGPT?

AGPT (Australian General Practice Training) is the main one, but there's also RVTS (Remote Vocational Training Scheme), FSP (Fellowship Support Program for specialist IMGs) and the PEP Specialist Stream. Each has different eligibility and timelines. Use the FRACGP pathway selector to compare.

🩺 Workflow & admin

Did you know — TIS National provides a free phone interpreter for medical consultations on 131 450?

The Doctors Priority Line is 1300 131 450 — same service, fast-tracked queue for medical practitioners. Free for the prescriber, free for the patient, available in over 150 languages, 24/7 for urgent calls. You don't need to pre-book for most languages.

Did you know — every patient's AIR immunisation history is visible to you in HPOS?

The Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) shows every recorded immunisation for any patient, regardless of where it was given. Check it before vaccinating — especially for adult catch-up, pneumococcal (with the July 2026 rules), and travel. Reporting immunisations to AIR is mandatory.

Did you know — Medicare claims rejected for "incorrect details" can usually be corrected and resubmitted from your billing software?

Most billing software lets you correct a rejected claim and resubmit without phoning Medicare. Common rejections: wrong provider number, wrong patient Medicare details, wrong item-date pairing, missing referral details. Check the rejection code first — most are mechanical, not clinical.
