Medicare fees are indexed on 1 July each year. Current as at July 2026 MBS.
If you have left the Australian Defence Force, Medicare covers a free one-off health check with your usual GP — designed around the health needs of people who have served.
Former members of the Permanent Forces or the Reserves can have a one-off Veterans' Health Assessment with their usual GP. It is a thorough check of your physical and mental health and your transition out of service. Medicare covers 100% of the fee, so at a bulk-billing practice there is no out-of-pocket cost.
This is general information about Medicare eligibility, not medical advice — your GP confirms what you qualify for.
The Medicare assessment above is a one-off. Separately, some DVA Veteran Card holders can have an Annual Veterans' Health Check, which is arranged through the Department of Veterans' Affairs rather than Medicare. If you hold a Veteran Card, ask your GP or DVA which applies to you.
Medicare covers 100% of the schedule fee. At a bulk-billing practice there is no out-of-pocket cost; if the practice bills privately you may have a gap — ask reception. You need to have the assessment with your usual GP (the practice that provides most of your care), so it is worth booking a longer appointment and mentioning it is a Veterans' Health Assessment when you call.
Open Arms — Veterans & Families Counselling provides free, confidential support for current and former ADF members and their families. You can reach it through the Open Arms website. If you are ever in crisis, call 000.
This is general information about a Medicare-funded health check, not medical advice, and it does not replace your GP. Your practice confirms your eligibility at the time of your visit.
