The digital card is accepted at most GP clinics, pharmacies, and hospitals in Australia. However, it is worth keeping your physical card somewhere safe for the rare occasion a provider does not accept the digital version. Medicare cards are replaced automatically when they expire — a new card will be posted to your enrolled address.
You can create a myGov account for free at my.gov.au. You will need an email address and your Medicare card number to link Medicare to your account. The process takes about 5 minutes.
Each person needs their own myGov account to add the Medicare card to their own phone. The card shows details for all individuals enrolled on it. For children, a parent or guardian can show their card on behalf of the child.
Yes. The card is stored securely within Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, which use device-level encryption. The card is only accessible when you unlock your phone. It is no less secure than carrying the physical card in your wallet.
You can request a replacement card through your myGov account, the myGov app, or by calling Services Australia on 132 011. A new card is typically posted within 5–10 business days. In the meantime, your GP can look up your Medicare number if you give them your full name and date of birth.
