How to register
Choose the method that suits you.

Go to my.gov.au and sign in

Use your myGov username and password. No account? Create one free at my.gov.au — takes 5 minutes.

Go to Medicare → MyMedicare

Select Medicare from your dashboard, then select MyMedicare from the menu.

Search for your practice

Search by practice name, suburb or postcode. Select your regular practice.

Choose your preferred GP (optional)

Nominating a preferred GP is optional — you can still see any GP at the practice.

Confirm and submit

Registration is usually active within a few business days once your practice accepts.

Easiest on a phone. The official Australian Government app. Free on iOS and Android.

Sign in and go to Medicare

Your Medicare details are pre-filled. Tap Medicare from the home screen.

Tap MyMedicare → Register

Search for your practice, select it, choose a preferred GP if you wish, then confirm.

Best option if you don’t have a myGov account. Your practice handles the online submission for you.

Ask at reception for a MyMedicare form

Any registered practice will have the form. Ask at the front desk before or after your appointment.

Fill in the form

You’ll need your Medicare card (or DVA card) number. Nominate a preferred GP if you wish. Sign to give consent.

Hand it back — the practice submits it for you

Your practice enters your registration in the MyMedicare system within 7 days. Nothing else needed from you.

Tip: If unsure whether your practice is registered in MyMedicare, just ask at reception. Most practices are now registered. Services Australia ↗

Longer telehealth calls with your GP

MyMedicare unlocks longer Medicare-rebated phone and video calls — 20+ and 40+ minute consultations become claimable. Without registration, phone consults are limited to shorter items.

Triple bulk billing incentive — if eligible

From 1 November 2025, bulk billing incentives apply to all eligible patients — not just children under 16 or concession card holders. Your GP can claim an incentive for bulk billing any Medicare patient. This makes bulk billing more financially viable for practices across all patient groups. Source: MBS Online, November 2025

Chronic disease care plans — important change

If you have a chronic condition (e.g. diabetes, heart disease, arthritis), your GP can create a care plan. From July 2025, if you’re registered with MyMedicare, that care plan must be done at your registered practice.

Aged care residents — GP incentive

If you live in a residential aged care facility, your GP can claim the GP in Aged Care Incentive when you’re registered — supporting more regular visits.

Mental health treatment plan by telehealth

Since 1 November 2025, your GP can only prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan by video if you've seen them (or another GP at the practice) face-to-face in the last 12 months — or you're registered with that practice through MyMedicare. Registering removes the face-to-face requirement.

Can I still see other GPs after registering?▼
Yes. MyMedicare does not restrict you to one GP or practice. You simply have a registered home practice which you can change at any time. Services Australia ↗
Does it guarantee bulk billing?▼
No. From 1 November 2025, bulk billing incentives apply to all eligible patients — not just under-16s and concession holders. MyMedicare still unlocks additional incentives for longer telehealth items, but the base BBI now covers all patients. Practices set their own billing policy — but each practice sets its own billing policy. health.gov.au ↗
Does it cost anything?▼
No. MyMedicare is completely free for patients. No subscription, no fee, no change to your Medicare coverage.
Can I register my children?▼
Yes. Children can register at the same practice as their parent. If either the child or parent meets the 2-visit requirement, the family can register. From November 2025, all patients are eligible for bulk billing incentives — children included. Services Australia ↗
I have a chronic disease care plan — what does this mean for me?▼
From 1 July 2025, if you are registered with MyMedicare, your GP care plan must be prepared and reviewed at your registered practice — not another clinic, even if your preferred GP works there. If you change practices, update your MyMedicare registration first. Existing plans from before July 2025 remain valid until 30 June 2027. DoH CDM changes ↗
Can I change or cancel my registration?▼
Yes. Change your registered practice, change your preferred GP, or withdraw from MyMedicare at any time — through myGov, the app, or by asking your practice.
Is MyMedicare the same as My Health Record?▼
MyMedicare registers you with a GP practice. My Health Record stores your clinical information. My Medicare (via myGov) is where you check claims and Safety Net balance. Three separate things. My Health Record ↗
Do I need to register with MyMedicare to get a mental health treatment plan?▼
Not always. Since 1 November 2025, your GP can only prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan by video telehealth if either: you've seen that GP (or another GP at the same practice) face-to-face in the last 12 months, or you're registered with that practice through MyMedicare. If you usually see your GP in person, you likely already meet the first pathway and don't need to register just for this. Registering matters most if you mainly use telehealth or you're a newer patient without a recent in-person visit. Dept of Health factsheet ↗
