From 1 July 2026 (now in effect): 21vPCV (Capvaxive) replaces both Prevenar 13 and Pneumovax 23 for adults 18+ on the NIP. Recommended age without a risk condition is now 65 (was 70); Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults from 25 (was 50). Adults who have had any prior pneumococcal vaccine (23vPPV, 13vPCV, 15vPCV or 20vPCV) are recommended one dose of 21vPCV at least 12 months after their last dose, NIP-funded regardless of timing. Funded (adults 18+) only for specified conditions (Handbook table), e.g. asplenia, chronic liver disease, haemoglobinopathy, HIV, transplant, haematological malignancy, inborn errors of immunity, COPD/bronchiectasis/cystic fibrosis, nephrotic syndrome, eGFR <15. Not funded for adults: diabetes, heart disease, severe asthma, interstitial lung disease, immunosuppressive therapy, non-haematological cancers on chemo/radiotherapy. Check the condition →

From 1 October 2026 COVID-19 vaccines are funded under the NIP for defined groups — adults 75+, adults 65–74, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 50–74, and adults 18–64 with severe immunocompromise. ATAGI: “recommended” doses are funded, “consider” doses are not. This tool shows the ATAGI recommendation and NIP funding status for your patient (source: ATAGI statement, 7 Sep 2026).
