📣 What's changed & what's coming
COVID-19 — moved to the NIPIn effect from 1 October 2026
- COVID-19 vaccines moved from the stand-alone National COVID-19 Vaccine Program onto the National Immunisation Program — the same mechanism as flu, pneumococcal and RSV.
- Free NIP-funded vaccination is now limited to adults 75+ (2 doses/year), adults 65–74, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 50–74, and adults 18–64 with severe immunocompromise (1 dose/year each). ATAGI: “recommended” doses are funded, “consider” doses are not — those patients can purchase privately.
- Ordering, distribution and reporting are now managed through state/territory NIP arrangements. ATAGI statement issued 7 September 2026; Handbook chapter updated from 1 October 2026. Full reference: COVID-19 vaccine clinician guide.
Pneumococcal — 21vPCV (Capvaxive)From 1 July 2026
- Capvaxive (21vPCV) replaces Prevenar 13 + Pneumovax 23 for adults on the NIP — a single, simplified schedule covering more strains.
- Free on the NIP for adults ≥65, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander adults ≥25, and adults ≥18 with specified risk conditions.
- The age thresholds drop (previously 70 / 50). See the Department of Health's adult pneumococcal program advice. Full reference: Adult pneumococcal (21vPCV / Capvaxive) clinician guide.
RSV — older adults (Arexvy)NIP since 15 May 2026
- Arexvy is free on the NIP for all adults ≥75 and First Nations adults ≥60.
- Single dose, protection across at least two seasons — no annual revaccination. Not for use in pregnancy.
- NIP eligibility is linked to Medicare; brands aren't interchangeable. Reference: NCIRS RSV FAQs.
RSV — pregnancy & infantsYear-round / seasonal
- Abrysvo (maternal) is funded for each pregnancy from 28 weeks gestation, offered year-round — the only RSV vaccine approved in pregnancy.
- Nirsevimab (Beyfortus) for infants is funded through state/territory programs (seasonal), not the NIP — check your jurisdiction's program dates and eligibility.

⚠️ Immunisation schedules change — typically each January and mid-year. This hub reflects the NIP as at
1 October 2026; the pneumococcal change applied from 1 July 2026, and the COVID-19 transition to the NIP took effect on 1 October 2026 (see the ATAGI statement of 7 September 2026). Always confirm current eligibility against the
Australian Immunisation Handbook and your state/territory program before vaccinating. This is information for health professionals, not clinical advice for an individual patient.
How this stays neutral. This hub is GP-authored and anchored on ATAGI, the NIP and NCIRS. It's funded by display ads, not by vaccine manufacturers, and inclusion of any tool or reference is never endorsement of a product. See our
