Most NIP-scheduled vaccines have a minimum first-dose age of
6 weeks (DTPa-containing, hepatitis B [excluding the birth dose], Hib, IPV, PCV, rotavirus, MenACWY, MenB). The main exceptions:
- MMR and most varicella-containing vaccines — 12 months;
- Varilrix (monovalent varicella) — from 9 months in special circumstances;
- Hepatitis A (for eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children) — 12 months;
- Hepatitis B birth dose — within 7 days of birth (no catch-up birth dose if missed).
MMRV is recommended as the 2nd (not 1st) dose of MMR-containing vaccine in children under 4 years; as a first dose it can only be given after 4 years of age (Handbook update, 19 January 2026). A dose given below the minimum age may not be valid — check the Handbook’s minimum-age table and the action for inadvertent early doses before counting it.
