The NHMRC Australian Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol (2020) recommend:
Guideline 1: To reduce the risk of harm from alcohol-related disease or injury, healthy adults should drink no more than 10 standard drinks per week and no more than 4 standard drinks on any single day.
Guideline 2: Children and young people under 18 should not drink alcohol.
Guideline 3: Women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy should not drink alcohol. Women who are breastfeeding should not drink alcohol.
The less you drink, the lower your risk. There is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
In Australia, a standard drink contains 10 grams of pure alcohol. This is roughly:
๐บ 285ml of full-strength beer (4.8%) = 1.1 standard drinks
๐บ 375ml stubby/can of mid-strength beer (3.5%) = 1.0 standard drink
๐ท 100ml of wine (13%) = 1.0 standard drink
๐ฅ 30ml of spirits (40%) = 1.0 standard drink
๐พ 150ml of sparkling wine (12%) = 1.4 standard drinks
The number of standard drinks is shown on all packaged alcohol sold in Australia. Check the label to keep track of your intake accurately.
