One Australian standard drink equals 10 grams of pure alcohol. The formula is: volume (in litres) × ABV (%) × 0.789 ÷ 10. For example, a pint of beer: 0.568 × 4.8 × 0.789 ÷ 10 = 2.2 standard drinks. Note that a 30ml spirit nip at 40% ABV is exactly 1 standard drink — this is the reference measure used in Australian guidelines.
