What you can get for free or cheaper — prescriptions, GP visits, dental, and more.
Most funded prescription medicines cost $5 per item (since Jul 2024). Free for: under 14, 65+ (SuperGold Card), and CSC holders (from GP/public hospital). From Feb 2026: some stable conditions can get 12-month scripts — you only pay the $5 once at first collection. After 20 paid items per year (1 Feb – 31 Jan), remaining scripts are free (Prescription Subsidy Card).
You still need a prescription from your doctor — the dispensing fee was removed, not the requirement for a prescription. Some non-funded or brand-name medicines may still have a cost. Ask your pharmacist.
| Who | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Children under 14 | Free | Free GP visits and free after-hours. |
| Enrolled adult (standard) | $40–$70 | Varies by practice. Enrolment reduces the fee. |
| Community Services Card holder | $19–$30 | Reduced fee at most practices. |
| Very Low Cost Access practice | $19 or less | Government-funded practices with capped fees. |
| Casual (not enrolled) | $70–$100+ | Much higher. Always enrol with a practice. |
Tip: If cost is a barrier, ask your practice about payment plans. Many practices offer these. Some practices also have nurses who can see you for free for some issues.
A CSC reduces the cost of GP visits and some other health services. You may be eligible if you are on a lower income.
What it gives you:
How to apply: Online at workandincome.govt.nz or call 0800 559 009. You need proof of income. Processing takes about 10 working days.
If you visit your GP 12 or more times in a year for an ongoing condition, you may qualify for a HUHC. This reduces your GP fees to the CSC rate regardless of your income.
How to get one: Your GP practice can apply on your behalf. You need to have been enrolled at the practice for at least 12 months and have visited 12+ times in the past year.
Who it's for: People with chronic conditions requiring frequent GP visits — diabetes, COPD, chronic pain, mental health conditions, etc.
