GLP-1 medicines — what to ask your GP

Answer a few quick questions and this tool builds you a short, personalised summary — current TGA approval status, PBS subsidy status, typical private cost, and a tailored list of questions — to bring to your GP about Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and related options. This does not diagnose you or recommend a medicine — only your GP can do that, after assessing you.

📋 Sources: TGA Product Information (Wegovy, Mounjaro, Contrave, Duromine, Xenical); TGA AusPAR (Mounjaro, Sept 2024) and TGA registration record (Mounjaro OSA indication, Jun 2025); PBS Schedule (current to July 2026); cost figures from our shared GLP-1 cost dataset, built from multiple Australian pharmacies. Full list at the bottom of this page. Verified July 2026.
Not medical advice. This tool informs — it does not advise. It cannot tell you whether a GLP-1 medicine is appropriate, safe or suitable for you. It exists to help you walk into your GP appointment with the right facts and the right questions already in hand.
Step 1 of 2
What brings you here today?
Step 2 of 2
Has a doctor mentioned a BMI of 30+, or 27+ with a related condition (like high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, fatty liver, or pre-diabetes)?
Has a sleep study confirmed your sleep apnoea is moderate or severe (not mild)?
Do you, or a close family member, have a history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 syndrome?
Are you currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy soon?

Common questions

No. It organises public TGA-approval, PBS-subsidy and typical-cost information based on what you tell it, and turns that into questions for your GP. It cannot diagnose you, cannot recommend a medicine, and cannot confirm you're an appropriate candidate — only your GP can do that after a proper assessment.
From a range of Australian online pharmacies (including Chemist Warehouse, which tends to be among the cheapest), cross-checked against several others, plus telehealth providers for market context. Traditional/independent pharmacies and bundled telehealth programs often cost more than the low end shown — figures are indicative only, and worth confirming with your own pharmacy. See the full Weight Management Explorer for the per-dose-tier breakdown.
It depends on the medicine and the indication. Ozempic (semaglutide) is PBS-listed with authority criteria for type 2 diabetes, but must not be used under that listing for weight loss alone. Wegovy (semaglutide for weight) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide — for any of its three TGA indications: diabetes, weight, or sleep apnoea) are not PBS-listed as of July 2026 and require a private script. The one exception: the PBAC recommended a future Wegovy listing (November 2025) for people with established cardiovascular disease and obesity, but it is not yet in effect. See GLP-1 Options in Australia for the full picture.
The BMI thresholds shown are the TGA's on-label approval criteria, not a hard rule about what your GP can discuss with you. Your GP considers your overall clinical picture — this is exactly the kind of thing worth raising directly in your appointment rather than ruling yourself out in advance.
A personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 syndrome, and pregnancy/breastfeeding, are listed in the TGA Product Information as situations where GLP-1/GIP medicines are generally avoided. This tool flags them so you remember to raise them clearly with your GP — it doesn't rule anything in or out itself.
As of June 2025, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is TGA-approved for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea in adults with obesity — the first medicine registered in Australia specifically for OSA. It works indirectly, through weight loss easing pressure on the airway, not as a direct respiratory treatment, and the approval doesn't cover mild OSA. No other GLP-1 (Ozempic, Wegovy) has this indication. See our Sleep Apnoea guide for the full picture, including CPAP and other options.
