Tips for your blood test

Book online if you can. Walk-in centres can have long waits, especially early morning when fasting patients arrive. Most providers now have online booking.

Go early. Fasting tests are best done first thing in the morning so you spend less time hungry. Most centres are busiest 7:00โ€“8:30am.

Drink water. Even if fasting, you can (and should) drink plain water. Hydration makes veins easier to find.

Ask about electronic requests. Many GPs now send pathology requests electronically. The lab can find your request using your name and date of birth โ€” no paper needed.

Results go to your GP. Pathology results are sent to the requesting doctor, usually within 1โ€“3 days. You'll need to contact your GP for results โ€” the pathology lab generally won't give them to you directly.
