What's normal — hour by hour

🔴
Straight away

Redness, stinging and swelling at the site. This usually settles within the day.

💧
Within a few hours

A blister forms. The fluid may be clear or blood-tinged — both are normal and expected. Do not pop it on purpose.

👁️
Near the eye (if treated nearby)

Puffy eyelids are common, often worst the morning after, and usually settle within a few days.

🩹
Over the following days

The blister dries into a scab. Dab on a thin layer of plain petroleum jelly and leave it alone — don't pick or scratch it off.

🎨
Over the following weeks to months

The skin may look paler or darker than the surrounding area for a while. This is common, especially in darker or olive skin, and usually fades over time.

How long the scab usually lasts

LocationTypical healing time
FaceAbout 5–10 days
HandAbout 3 weeks
Lower legUp to 3 months (slower circulation lower down the leg)

Healing speed varies by site, how deep the freeze was, and your own circulation and general health — these are typical ranges, not guarantees.
